Luis Goncalves has returned to the Mozambique bench but this time in the hot seat after being appointed the new coach of the Mambas.
He had previously served for two years as an assistant to Abel Xavier but after falling out with the former Portugal international fullback left the job in May last year and was working as coach of China’s under-16 national team before being enticed back.
Goncalves, 47, has a long career as a youth team coach at the likes of Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto and Belenenses but this is his first role in charge of a senior team.
The Portuguese was born in Maputo and returned there in January 2016 as one of Abel Xavier’s assistants. He stayed for just over two years before leaving.
Abel Xavier did not have his contract renewed when it ended in July and Victor Matine stepped in to take charge of the team for the African Nations Championship (CHAN-2020) qualifiers against Madagascar, which saw Mozambique eliminated.
Goncalves’ first assignment will come in at the start of next month when Mozambique meet Mauritius over two legs in the preliminary round of the World Cup qualifiers. In November they begin their bid to qualify for the next Cup of Nations finals in 2021.
They were drawn in Group F with hosts Cameroon, the Cape Verde Islands and Rwanda.
