Orlando Pirates have done arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs a huge favour in the Absa Premiership title race by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at a sold-out Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers edged the Brazilians thanks to a first-half strike from Frank Mhango, though ‘Downs coach Pitso Mosimane will feel his side deserved more from a very evenly-contested match.
The result means Chiefs’ nine-point lead over Sundowns holds more weight, with the Tshwane side now having played the same number of games as the pace-setters, while Pirates will be pleased at moving back into the top five.
Elsewhere on Wednesday night, Bidvest Wits kept themselves in the title race with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in Johannesburg.
The Clever Boys, who won the game thanks to a late, acrobatic effort from the in-form Gift Motupa, are 11 points off the pace of Chiefs but do have three games in hand on the Soweto giants.
The Absa Premiership continues with a full round of fixtures this coming weekend, 17-19 January, with the headline fixture Sundowns’ clash away to Tshwane derby rivals SuperSport United on Sunday.
