Africa’s good run at the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Brazil continued on Wednesday when Senegal defeated European champions Netherlands 3-1 to become the third side from the continent to seal a place in the knockout stages.
Their passage follows that of Nigeria and Angola, all achieved after just two rounds of pool stage matches to show their quality at the tournament.
Senegal fell behind to an early goal for Naouful Bannis as the Dutch seized control of the game, but as has been the pattern at these championships, the African side came roaring back.
Striker Pape Sarr scored a brace to take his side into the lead, and the points were made safe deep into injury-time at the end of the game when substitute Aliou Balde added a third.
Cameroon are the only African side to have disappointed so far after a surprise 1-0 loss to Tajikistan in their opener, and will now hope to get something from their meeting with Argentina on Thursday to get their campaign back on track.
